Me? Yes, you!
Caught red handed....and I would love to deny it or downplay it but I am going to confess, I am a sugar addict. It has gotten much much better over the years, but I still consume WAY too much sugar. Did you know, it is recommended that we
consume 25 grams of added sugar a day but on average we OVER consume a whopping 66 POUNDS of sugar a year!
I am not there yet, but I am committed to eating 25 grams or less of added sugar daily. Who wants to join me?
Here are some ways to cut the sugar:
First, just say NO. I am serious, just do not even get started with that cupcake, donuts, or piece of candy. Personally, I know many times I have said, "Just one" and ended up eating way more than I originally planned.
Investigate what has you craving sweet treats to begin with. What are you REALLY craving?
Is it emotions? Are you stressed? Do you feel alone? Angry? Sad?
Are you lacking essential vitamins and nutrients?
Are you dehydrated?
When the sugar comes calling your name, you (I) can do the following:
STOP: (and really stop for at least 1 full minute)
S: Smell something fresh, maybe mint, essential oils, really anything other than a cinnamon roll or baked apple pie candle, catch my drift?
T: Tea, herbal teas are great and can have a healthy sweetness to them or go for fresh fruit or another healthy alternative.
O: Open up your heart and mind to what you really are craving in this moment.
P: People, get around people, whether it is picking up the phone to call a friend or walking around outside where you know people will be passing by, sometimes that added support or that distraction is just what you need to get your mind off the sugar.
Any other suggestions that you've found work for you kicking the sugar habit? Please share!
